11.8 Glossary

 

Asynchronous.  Refers to course activities which do NOT require completion at designated times.  Examples include discussion boards and dropboxes.

Blackboard.  The Course Management System adopted by KCTCS beginning Fall 2006.

CMS.  See Course Management System.

 

Course Management System.  The software programs used to teach online classes.  Examples include Blackboard and Angel.

HTML.  “Hyper Text Markup Language.”  This is the file format used in making webpages. 

Internet Service Provider.  A company that provides Internet access to customers.  Examples include America Online and NetZero.

 

ISP.  See Internet Service Provider.

 

Synchronous.  Refers to course activities which take place during a designated time period.  Examples include chatrooms.

Thread.  A linked discussion in a discussion board.  All replied to an initial post are “threaded” below the initial post.

 

Rtf.  See Rich Text Format.

 

Rich Text Format.  A format for word processing documents that allows users with different Word Processing programs to view your work.
